Regional
issue description: While source
water assessment efforts are progressing within the region,
there is a substantial need to educate small water system
operators and others whose activities can affect ground
and surface sources of drinking water. A fundamental element
of protecting these supplies is comprehensive wellhead and
watershed protection that includes site management education
(addressing activities such as site development, lawn care
and the proper management of hazardous materials). The regional
program is focusing initially on the educational needs of
small, underserved water suppliers (the operators of small
businesses that also supply water, such as rural apartment
houses, convenience stores, restaurants, and recreational
campgrounds), by developing a program, Businesses Providing
Safe Drinking Water, including risk reduction, site
assessment, and educational materials in a manual titled
"Providing Quality Water: A Primer for Small Business and
Organizations," developed by Cornell University and funded
through the CSREES Water Quality Program.
